One Night at Northlands in Elkader
Elkader – Patrick’s Bar. No plan but Jim May explained how he and Larry Johnson went to the local hardware store to purchase rubbers for Larry’s musical act. August Rubrecht told the Clyde Saga, the story of how difficult it was for his hunting dogs to avoid the seven deadly sins what with the pheromones and all. I told Larry Johnson, Car Wars and Safer Sex what with the pheromones and all. Then Larry played the Toreador Song from Carmen on his trumpet mouthpiece with rubber attached after a discussion about how to best affix a rubber. The rubber burst at the climax of The Toreador Song.
Nothing planned–just all playing off one another at Patrick’s in Elkader.
It was a time with no soundsystem–I can talk over you kills the communal feel–you stood up and waited to be recognized and for the full house to give you their attention and then their appreciation. No MC, no plan, no timing, no convention center, just story.
Patricia Coffie – Northlands 1980 to the present and so pleased to celebrate that.
